If you’ve had to replace a car battery in the past few years, you’ve probably noticed that it has gotten more expensive. In fact, battery prices have increased over the past decade. Consumer Reports investigates the reasons for the price hikes and suggests ways to save money.

You probably grew up with a battery such as a lead-acid or “flooded” battery. But many new cars are now fitted with Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries. Some lead-acid batteries have been improved with advanced materials and design, but the other type, AGM batteries, use a glass mat separator to allow an electrolyte solution to move between the battery plates. thin. This makes them well suited to repeated oil changes and refills.

Why are automakers using these new, more expensive batteries? Today’s high-tech cars need more electrical power. As vehicle technology evolves, cars need more and more electrical power to operate functions such as today’s stop / start technology, safety and convenience functions, and all additional sockets that charge our devices.

Unsurprisingly, these upgraded batteries also come with a improved price tag. AGM batteries can cost anywhere from $ 200 to $ 300, which is twice as much as traditional lead-acid batteries, so you want to make sure you buy one that will last.

CR subjects the batteries to a battery of tests, simulating a vehicle cranking thousands of times, in mild and cold weather.

And remember, according to Consumer Reports, you don’t have to buy a battery from a car dealership or specialty store. Buying from a big box store can save you money, and often auto parts stores will even install it for you. And there is no need to buy the most expensive replacement battery. CR tests show that some lead-acid batteries perform almost as well as AGMs but cost a lot less.

CR also states that you need to replace your car battery with the same size and type, but you can switch from a traditional battery to an AGM model.
