Residents of Ipswich care homes have had their own classic car show – after a mix-up caused them to miss an annual rally.

Henley House care home in Henley Road makes an annual trip to the classic car race from Ipswich to Felixstowe, but after a change in route due to roadworks, residents missed the rally.

After contacting organizers and classic car group, East Coast Retros, a classic car show was brought straight to residents’ doorsteps on Saturday 21st May.

Organizer and East Coast Retros member Hannah Carpenter said as soon as the group discovered the mix-up they wanted to help: “They put them in a mini-bus and took them there, and they sat there for an hour and during that time they could only see three vehicles.

“It became apparent later that the course had changed this year and they weren’t aware of it, so unfortunately they missed it.

“Normally, the course remains the same, but this year, due to works, it had to be modified.

“I have a few friends who work at the care home and one of them contacted me and said you would be able to bring one of the cars to the house because the residents are so disappointed.

“So I said if I bring a few more than one. So I was really hoping I could get five or six, so I posted a message asking for help asking if anyone would be willing to take their classic car to the retirement home.

“I was overwhelmed with the response; I’ve had so many people say they want to bring their vehicle which is lovely.

“I was hoping to get maybe ten at the most, so I was really shocked when I managed to get 40!”

Henley House administrator Lyn Andrews said: “We are so grateful and overwhelmed that they gave up their afternoon to come and show the residents their cars.

“For them, it’s great, it’s a bit like the outside world that comes to the retirement home. They would have had these cars, it also brings back memories.

“We can’t thank them enough.”
