Of the 6 lakh automatic cars sold by Maruti to date, 5 lakh are AMT (a cheaper automatic transmission technology) and the very first AMT car was only released by Maruti in 2014 – in gasoline form. Celerio.

Maruti is now preparing to tackle the BS6 diesel problem. For now, they say they will ditch all their diesel cars by April 1, 2020 – because they won’t update their diesel engines to meet BS6 standards. They are of the opinion that BS6 diesel cars will become very expensive and therefore lead to lower sales.

So it is not worth investing in upgrading to BS6 diesel technology. But, at the same time, there are reports that Maruti could launch the BS6 diesel option in its bigger cars like Ertiga, XL6 and Ciaz. But that will happen in early 2021, as they would like to see how the market reacts to BS6 diesel cars after the government deadline of April 1, 2020.
